man, oh man
syria was phenomonal. two weeks of chaos, beauty, the tranquil atriums, narghileh, chai bin 'ana.
sahha....
i loved the country, the city, and all the crazy ruins, although a little ruins go long way for me.
ah, history. nice to be saturated with it when california is so... new.
I have a request: does anyone know anyone who speaks levantine arabic who lives in the bay area who would be interested in tutoring?
I could pay in part and do a massage trade. Or just pay in full, whatever works.
anyone? anyone?

Re: beautiful syria.....
Mon, August 15, 2005 - 11:04 PMI tried to learn Levantine a long time ago (from our Syrian neighbors in Riyadh).
Don't remember it as being very hard, but then again, my mother tongue is Urdu and the script and a lot of the vocabulary aren't a problem.
Anyway, Andrea, just go sing-song and wave your hands a lot. You'll do fine!
I need a push to get into Classical. Have Wheeler Thackston's book. If anyone would like to join me in this venture, please let me know. -

Sat, September 3, 2005 - 1:47 PMHey
First question, what is levantine arabic. Is it the official name for the syrian dialect, or it's something apart.
Usman, I'm trying to learn arabic too. I got till Lower Intermediate at Mcgill, but been busy for a year setting up a new business. I want to get to it, on my own this time. I was thinking Tutor + book. That book of yours, how is it ? What does it focus on? Any other ressources you found ?

Re: beautiful syria.....
Mon, September 5, 2005 - 1:44 PMSyrian (or Levantine) Arabic is a dialect spoken by Syrians, Jordanians, Lebanese and Palestinians (all these people previously spoke Syriac). It's probably the nicest souding of all Arabic dialects. I don't know if it is used in print media, like Egyptian Arabic is.
The Persian Gulf and North Africa also have different dialects. For the latter, even some counting numerals are different!
Thackston's book is for learning Classical Arabic, quite another language in a sense, which is used in the Quran, books, newspapers, political speeches and fatwas. BTW, it doesn't have religious connotations any more. Lebanese Christians sort of created its renaissance in the 19th century while under Ottoman rule.
My native tongue is Urdu, which is related to Arabic as English is to Latin. So I don't know if Thackston's focus on grammar & so on would work for you. You could perhaps try books written for future diplomats. I sort of remember one out of Princeton, but can't remeber any more details.

Re: beautiful syria.....
Tue, August 16, 2005 - 9:12 PMHi Andrea,
Sounds like a great trip!
You might try Pacific Arabic Resources (www.pacificarabic.com) for a Levantine Arabic tutor...I know they offer privates/tutoring. (Tell them hi from Monica! :-) )
I think the Arab Cultural Center (www.arabculturalcenter.org/) would be a good resource to find a tutor, as well.
Good luck!

Re: beautiful syria.....
Tue, March 28, 2006 - 8:07 PMmake some lebanese friends:) i was in lebanon and syria this summer and having lebanese friend here when i returned as really helped me a lot.
levantine is a broad name for greater syria which includes lebanon and palestine, though there is some debate im sure. however, each of these countries has a different dialect. the word for orange for example, is different in paslestinian arabic, than in lebanese dialect. lebanese dialect has a large infusion of french thrown into the slang. there is a shirt that says has hello in lebanese: bonjour, keefik, hi (i think that was the english, i cant remember)
lots of fun.
also, if you can get a hold of LBC station on satellite (i cant spell to save my life) it is the lebanese brodcasting channel and you can get a good daily dose of 'levantine' dialect through the shows, commercials, and music. -

Re: beautiful syria.....
Wed, March 29, 2006 - 4:48 AMI mentioned this on another thread somewhere but there is a free book available online for download ,called Syrian Arabic:
syrianarabic.com/
Certainly someone with some background in Modern Standard Arabic shouldn't find it too difficult.
