He sings using high/classical Arabic so is understood everywhere in the Arabic world. There is also a Syrian singer called Nour Mehana, very famous in certain areas, who also sings in classical Arabic and used to be a Koran singer. I guess, Oum Koulthoum and Fairuz are not an option for you?
