I read in a text book that Levantine people will say "la" by glancing up with their eyes.
Can someone shed more light on this? because if it's true I'm doomed - in the pacific a lot of people say "yes" by raising the eyebrows & it's a hard habit to break.

Re: Saying "no" non-verbally
Sat, March 17, 2007 - 1:09 AMYes, that's true. Sometimes we make a 'tsk' sound to go with it. A British friend of mine who visited Lebanon some time ago thought people were being rude by tsk-ing and tilting their chins up, or raising their brows - I explained to him that (more often than not), it just means 'no.' -

Re: Saying "no" non-verbally
Sun, March 18, 2007 - 12:12 PMThat's interesting - the Turks do that too! ( a little "tut", accompanied by a chin lift or eyebrow lift).
Morrocans will indicate no with a finger shake (with your hand in front of you, point to the sky, then waggle your index finger left and right). Hmm, it's kind of hard to describe motions like that.
