Someone mentioned in another topic that it'd be nice if we knew what some of the curse words are in Arabic.
When I was in Arabic class, the very last week we begged our Misri (Egyptian) instructor to tell us what kinds of insults we'd hear, for instance, if we we're wandering around the souk. We coaxed a few out, but were aware there are plenty more creative insults in Arabic.
So, do you all have any references or websites that can tell us what we'll hear if we really tick someone off? You know, taxicab driver insults like you'd hear in NY--something like that? It'd be cool to compare insults from different dialects.
All in good humor. :)

I *do* know some bad words...(I've been taught some...Which I appreciate, because, like you, I'm not interested in using them, but I do want to know what they mean if I hear them in when I'm in Cairo!) I know, though, that I've barely scratched the surface...

Wed, December 6, 2006 - 5:25 PMYes, very enlightening. However, it doesn't say the dialect, and like everything else in Arabic, bad words are often dialect specific! Sometimes that alone makes for good giggles. Example - as the insultmonger site listed, Cous in Eastern arabic is female genitalia. But in Morocco, cous-cous is a dish consumed with enthusiasm by just about everyone. Here's another - in Moroccan Arabic, taboun is female genitalia. But in Eastern dialects, tabouni is the trunk of your car! -

Brings up another situation - I have a difficult time pronouncing Arabic words that are written in english. Not that my Arabic pronunciation is even up to par with a 1st grader, but when I look a the english spellings I get confused. When it's written in Arabic, it just makes more sense...phonetically speaking, I guess.
Anyone else run into that?
So...maybe someone can enlighten us to the Arabic spelling of...umm...female genitalia and the correct Arabic spelling for cous-cous. :) I mean, there's no 'c' in Arabic...there's kaaf and qaaf, right? and the 's' sound can be siin or saad.
Okay, Arabic 2 final next Tuesday.

Oh wait, another thing about slang: if you're a native English speaker, think of different meaning for 'pole', or 'jugs'. They can be used in slang as body parts, especially in conversations involving references of a bluer nature. I do not think it uncommon that other languages use common everday objects as references? (Umm...is that alliteration? It's not a euphemism, cuz a euphemism is supposed to be nice right? wait, shoulda learned english before trying to study another language.) -

Sun, December 10, 2006 - 5:01 PMYes - since I learned the Arabic alphabet, I no longer like transliterations. Even when someone is consistant in their transliteration key, it's still a drag because you have to keep translating the letters in your head (that's an 'ayn, and that's a hamza), instead of just reading them.
So now, if I get a song, I also try to get it written out in Arabic script.
I believe its kaaf, waaw, seen :-)
I know that they use "veiled references" / double entendres, as I can think of an example. When an Arab guy is bragging about his eggs, he's not talking about what's in his refrigerator.
Actually I don't what the grammatical term for that is either. I don't think we did a lot of grammer when I went through school (or if we didn't I've forgotten it all!) so when my text book says that you have to use the accusatic case, for the 2nd noun in an idafa structure, I've no idea what they are talking about! Does anyone know of a small book that explain grammer in simple English? :-) That would be useful to me! -

Fri, January 5, 2007 - 10:35 PMOK, I picked on one funny word in France. In standard Arabic, zameel means friend. In Moroccan it means a gay boy.
BTW, one cartons of couscous, the Arabic reads kukusoo.
In general, Arabs seem to say 'ummak' a lot (yo' mama). I don't know if they're into all the "yo mama's so big..." stuff :-)

some wandered about the dialect: it is egyptian
most of the english translation is bang on and some are a bit off. nut it is very informative indeed. and i toatlly understand the problem that some find when the arabic words are spelled in english. i myself find them a bit diffcult to get too.
