Hello,
I belong to a group of people intersted in Middle Eastern culture in the Four Corners area. One member came up with the name "Al Mafra" for the group. She says that it means "crossroads", but I cannot find it in my Arabic dictionary to verify the definition. If that is the correct translation, then I would like to verify the spelling. I'm assuming that it's:
(alif-laam) miim-faa-raa-taa marbuuta
If anyone can help me with the definition or spelling I would really appreciate it.

Fri, December 30, 2005 - 11:24 PMHello: The word in standard Arabic is Al Mafraq (with the root word faa-raa-qaf, which means difference), which then gets pronounced in the dialects without the qaf at the end as Al Mafra. So the spelling does not have a taa marbuuta but instead a qaf in place of taa marbuuta. -

Sat, December 31, 2005 - 9:54 AMAh, that explains why I couldn't find it in the dictionary. I was looking under the wrong root. Unfortunately I only have learned formal Arabic, so I am ignorant of the dialect variations. Thank you very much!
